Brake Vacuum Pump - Help!!

VW in Bristol tell me that the part I have broken in struggling to replace the starter motor is actually the Cover to the Pump, which was delisted in March. The complete unit is still available.
I'm just very confused as to what the Pump does. Has anybody replaced one of these, and if so is it a job that a beginner should/could tackle or does the vacuum render this as something requiring greater knowledge?
Any light thrown on the subject would be much appreciated.

You should be able to just change the cover, 3 bolts and the vaccuum pipe.

Becareful though as I believe ther is at least 3 types of cover which have different bolt hole spacing. I think I have 2 spare ones on 2 spare knackered 1.6T/D motors.

where abouts are you ?

cheers

Tku. Sorry shud have said mine is 1.6D watercooled 1981, LHD.
There are 3 bolts securing cover to pump. Two I've got undone, one refusing to shift, will try again tomorrow.
It's the plastic bit connecting the pipe to the cover that I managed to snap.
I'm midway between BRS and WSM on the A370.
Are we likely to be in business?
