I may have found a company who can offer us up-rated gas struts for us on T25/T3 tailgates when fitted with the typical unladen Fiamma bike rack.


Does anyone know roughly the weight of one of these items ?

Is it a two bike rack? My rack came with the van and the tail gate would not stay up even when unladen. I replaced the gas struts with 'off the shelf' parts from GSF 6 years ago and have had no problems since so I would not bother paying too much more for uprated struts.

The Fiamma rack is amazingly light but very strong which probably accounts for why they are so blooming pricey

You see the thing is I too could simply buy new struts but to be sure I could buy up-rated ones for a couple of quid more and forget all about them ever again.

I should have said it was a 2 bike rack which has had the extra quick rail added to make it into a 3 rail bike rack.

So the question is what weight is amazingly light ?

Whats wrong with the patented 80-90 22mm copper pipe method - My struts hold the tailgate and bike rack fine, just use the pipe when bikes on board

save yourself some cash

Well I'm 12 stone and I consider that to be amazingly light!!

I will weigh it for you if I can find the bathroom scales .... be right back......

Ok ... heres the result .... I am actually 12st 8lbs and holding the rack it reads 13st 3lbs so my my calculation the rack weighs a mere 9lbs ... not sure what that is in new money though.

On a negative note I have put on half a stone so am not very happy ... thank you for ruining my day

Just adding my penneth worth, we got the 2 bike fiamma rack, the old tailgate struts were on their last legs anyway so wouldn't hold up the (obviously unladen) rack.
A bog standard set from GSF sorted it and that was probably 2 years ago, with no problems so far.
The Fiamma racks are really good for safely holding bikes, as well as getting the bikes on/off easily. However, they do tend to dent neighbours car boots/bonnets as the bottom of the rack is a bit tricky to see folded up when reversing (oops!).

Keep in mind, stronger struts mean it will hit you in the face harder when bikes are not on it.
Also make it harder to pull down without bikes on it.

Personally, I'm staying with good stock struts.

Can I please remind those of us who are serious about these new items as they are only supposed to 'lift' the tail gate with a typical bike rack ie (Fiamma x3 or Paulchen x3 without any bikes fitted.......

Hey Fritz if your paying more than £14.80 for your rear struts thinks your bieng ripped off.
I bought a set from veedubmachine.co.uk £14.79 +pp £4.25 and they are the bees nees lifts my Fiamma rack no problem and stays up you need to be charles atlass to get it down though. thourouly recomend the to anyone

A new set of struts should set you back less than 20 quid incl postage. I found a new pair very easily on ebay which cured the problem. Also the struts are very simple to exchange. Why bother messing around with copper pipe? A length of 22mm copper pipe is probably gonna cost you almost as much anyway and the downside of using copper piping over existing struts is that it will probably rattle and wear your paintwork away.....honestly guv
