oil pressure gauge? why do i need to know..?

next question... what's this?

It was fitted by a previous owner... and I'm using my sherlock-like powers of deduction to guess it's a oil pressure gauge... ?!
question is - what's it actually telling me? (yes, ok... the pressure of the oil... ) - but why do i need to know... it seems to read high when starting cold... then fall away quite quickly to read around the 1bar mark... good or bad?
(you guys sick of me asking questions yet?)

It appears to be a Just Kampers oil pressure guage. You're early DG probably only has the low pressure flashing light (which should go out as soon as the engine starts and pressure raises) People often add these after-market guages to monitor oil pressure. Later 1.9 and 2.1 have 'The Buzzer Of Doom' which tells you you've no oil pressure and it's time to get the Kleenex out.
We don't tire of nice people who are polite and gratefull .... if you try to help yourself there'll allways be someone here to help ... if we can. Remember we all started off somewhere, buy a Haynes or Bentley manual and gradually you'll get up to speed on the T25s little 'eccentricities'
Cheers, Ian.

its a slow day.....
1.9 dg has this information from brickwerks site
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... DGdata.htm
says oil pressure should be around 2bar at 2,000 rpm
but suppose you would need to know where the sensor had been placed

ps - can put thicker oil in for tired engines.

Flashing light oil sensor is between the pushrod tubes on left bank of cylinders when viewed from the rear, brown wire dissapears under the pushrod tube cover.
Buzzer Of Doom sensor (where fitted) is below the waterpump and oil pump .... brown wire which passes down close to the waterpump, behind the crankshaft pulley.

oil level will only help if its silly low, by which time the damage would have been caused....
What oil is in there?? min of a 15w40 and if it is a bit tired a 20w50 works, if oil pressure is still low, then worth getting a check done as the gauge may be reading low... or you really do have low oil pressure...
A new pump may help (doesnt usually) or even removing the pump cover plate and fitting one without scorring from the rotors (if scored) can too.. Ususally its coz the bearings are tired and its just an age/miles thing..
One other thing, fit the correct oil filter.. not a Fram FP1 or similar, but either the gen VW one or a Mann...

1 bar at idle is fine.
Like Ermie said earlier, 2 bar is for running at 2000 rpm but as idle is only going to be about 850 rpm then one bar pressure is spot on.
It will be high when cold as the oil is thicker and has to squeeze around the system but as the oil warms up it thins, making the journey easier and so the pressure drops... Quite normal.

Sorry to jump on
2 bar @ 2000rpm what about 3000 or 4000rpm ?
oh mine is a JK 1600 diesel on a 4 speed DY box
