Ok I have my paint sorted, I am starting by spraying the front of the van this weekend. On the frnt window surround I have some rust bubbles which go under the window seal, to do a good job I will have to take the window out.

Any idea how easy this will be to achieve (with window in one piece?

From trawling the forums I believe that I need to push the internal rubber in all the way around then push out the window. I can't imagne how I will do that around the base of the dashboard?

Should I find someone to do it for me or do you think its possible?

hi pouch...
i did mine (wish i didnt coz of what i found) by poping the top corner very gently out. there is obviously a lip where the window rubber 'hugs' yes... get a couple of about 3" paint scrapers, position them at the top and side of the corner,pull the rubber away from the front panel (this is from the inside, ok?) Then gently apply pressure to the corner of the glass by sitting in the passenger seat and using your size 9! it should pop out quite nicely then..... you could do with an assistant out side to 'oversee' the dramatic affair.
The more of the rubber you dislodge, the easier the window will come out... if you get the corner out and decide you wish to go no further, i.e. (got scared!) it is too late..... you cant just pushit back in! the lot has to come out
Simple to get back in mind... let me know if you want pics/ advice...
There is a chance you will find some nice holes there, be prepared!!

I had a call around the local window fitters, to see if I could find a sensible price and a guy has quoted me £30 to drive over..take it out and come back when I like and fit it!

That sound like to much of a bargin to get involved in doing it myself.

Besides....I'll be all fresh for the holes......

be careful mate!
when i first popped mine out, i found a lovely hole, 9cm long and about 6mm width on the nearside bottom corner.... almost the same on the drivers side. But because I had ripped the window out, i had time to repair the offending area! . I can just imagine the scene when the window is popped out, and the chappy from the window company shruggs his shoulders at you!!! (with the look of,thats torn it then).. It really isnt that hard chap....... they go back in quite easily with some string and wash up liquid (honest)... Have some faith!!!

thats a bargain, its easy to bust this as its so large especially if you haven't done it before. Don't do it in really cold weather they can crack really easily. If you got holes on the window frame then you will be glad you took it out before it spreads right around the frame.
obviously get this repaired well before you put the screen back in.
Its worth getting a new rubber too as they shrink with age and don't seal properly after a few years. They never go back and seal 100% as well if its been in along time and you take it out as they mould into the shape that they have been sat in for several years. The JK seals are Ok at £25, Alan Scholfield aslo sells seals his will be good quality as he doesn't sell rubbish

How are people mending these holes?, it's looking abit grim in mine.
some years ago i just kicked the window out and had a new one fitted, cost me the £50 excess on insurance, so not bad.
but I bodged itthen with filler- not worked. anyone do repair panels?

Ive heard to use KY jelly instead of wash up liquid as washing up liquid has salt in it.

Alan scholfield sells or makes up window repair panels for this problem, any decent bodyshop will be able to fettle in some stell to repair this about £300

£300 ? id want a new van for that....

I did mine by grinding back an doing a wee plate underneath, then fibreglass on top/ bottom... then fill to smooth...(so rrubber fits nice again..) obv. depends on how close to the front the holes are...

Ok - here's how the weekend went.

The guys turned up to remove the window and he was a bit concerned about a small chip on the window. Anyway, he used a small screwdriver and worked on the inside rubbers all the way around and then gently poped the window out from the top. he only move the rubber inside around the top and 3/4s of the way down the side.

The rust was no-where near as bad as I expected just a hole either side the size of a 5p & 20p. Not bad for a 1981 van!. Then I removed the numberplate and found I had a hole the size of a cricket ball! The last owner had used a plate on th inside to hold the nuimber plate on!!

Rubbling down now and will get some paint on the front in a couploe of weeks, the window man will put it back in when I'm ready.. all for £30 top man
