Feeling v chuffed with myself having got the starter out and sourced a reconditioned unit locally (yes, I know I should have done it all myself but, hey life is too short etc etc...actually I didn't want to have to do it all over again).
I managed to get the new unit in but in doing so broke something else.
There's a mechanical piece which could be a sump or pump situated directly above and and further back from the starter. Into this goes a hose which at the other end connects to a plastic tube disappearing under the floorwell. At the sump end of the hose is a ceramic (I think) plug which has snapped exposing the remains of the ceramic in the sump. From here protrudes a fine red wire or tube.
What is it please?
Apologies for verbosity. I have taken photos but don't quite follow the FAQ as to how to upload. Guidance on this wud be useful too.

Possibly the brake vacum hose connector joby ?

Its made out of paper so breaks quite easily. I broke mine when i first changed my starter - about £20 from VW.....

Tks chaps, have to go down the pub this eve, will get on to it first thing in the morning. Have to say from Haynes the brake joby was a prime suspect.

Kev. thanks for Photobucket, I'm being thick! Uploaded pics and can see file boxes showing the IMG code. Ttried copy and paste, what it pasted was the code, not the picture. Is this right? Right or wrong, how do I copy all the pics at once?
Ringo, tks as well. I haven't a clue as to how to proceed, the manuals aren't helping. Will any VW dealer have the part? Do I then undo the 3 nuts holding the top of the unit in order to remove the broken bit. Is there a vacuum or is it really as straightforward as I want it to be? The hose end seems obvious.
