Steering Knuckle Knackered??

I am in the process of overhauling my front brakes, replacing the discs, calipers etc but have noticed that the thread on the steering knuckle appears to be worn?

The new hub nut I have purchased appears to go on but I have not tightened it for fear of cross threading. I am going to work on the other wheel in a moment so should be able to compare ..... if anyone has observations in the meantime I would be glad to hear?

If the nut doesnt go on and the hex part get past that damage then you MUST NOT refit.. the nut could come off and you will loose a wheel/do lots of damage..
there is evidence of the metal in the locking cutouts, so i expect the nut is pretty rough inside too.. looks like the nut was undone without the locking "straking" being undone.. a punch/centre punch etc should be used to "un strake" the outer part of the nut..

I have checked the other side and it looks pretty much identical ... i am guessing that the damage must have been caused some time ago as this is the first time I have removed the nuts (which both came undone without any effort) ...... looks like I will need a couple of replacement steering knuckles?

Ok, have had a re-think and re-fitted the disc & bearing in accordance with the manual i.e. you can just move the thrust washer with a screw driver and finger pressure.

The nut does not sit on the damaged threads and has been straked securely in three places as you can see from the updated Photos

All seems pretty secure to me .... I must say I am rather surprised at such a small nut to hold it all together, would I be right in assuming that this is primarily to hold the bearing in place and most of the load is taken by the tapered shaft?

OK, that doesnt look too bad.. 3 strakes is a bit much, but hopefully you wont have to adjust them for a long time.. what bearings did you use???

did you do the nut up fairly tight and spin the wheel before setting the play?

The nut stops it all falling off, and the large washer with tap prevents the bearing from spining the nut, but I have sen a failed bearing pick up on the washer and turn it 50% from the groove ripping a lump out of the stub..

Yes I suppose belt & braces and all that .... :) I will replace the nuts if I need to re-adjust or replace the bearings .......a mere £1-60 each from GSF so not much point in re-using them.

I refitted the original bearings after washing them in clean diesel and re-packing with grease. I was hoping toget the job completed today but GSF have supplied the wrong calipers** ........ yet another journey to their outlet. ....... lucky for me I have one very local (Poole).

** Quick update, I took the calipers back today and there appears to be some confusuion as to which ones I need? GSF could not be more helpful, would always use them in preference to the online suppliers
