My van just died!

I have a 1986 2.1 petrol van and the head just blew on the original engine. I have passed it over to a mechanic I trust but would like opions on what I should do as I want to invest in this van. Do I :-
-Just get head skimmed and new gaskets (but when engine is taken out to do this I fear alot of crusty bits will fall away)
-Buy a new engine same speck and have clutch looked at and exhaust system replaced as pretty knackered
-Buy a 1.9 engine (will it be more fuel economical?)

There has been no probs with bottom end but I wondered if labour charges would be better if done all in one go?
If anyone has been here please pass on your experiences and places to purchase bit bits - I want to get up and running to catch the summer but want to get it right.
Any response much appreciated
Gal on her on in a van and hoping to be at Vanfest!!

Buy an Elite recon 2.1 ... they're as economical if not more so than a 1.9.

Cost is ~£1K fitted by Elite and guaranteed for 2 years.

And elite will do any other work as necessary / instructed at a very reasonable labour rate too!

Thanx for replies! Have been in touch with Elite and all sounds good. Will look to buy engine and fit locally.
Any suggestions on best places to buy exhaust systems for my van, cost is important now my engine has drained my bank of dosh.
Cheers
