Does anyone know if I should fit a hose(VW p/n 068 103 493 AE) from my air dump/relief valve back to the inlet duct as pictured in Peter Russek's T25 manual. At the mo my valve just vents to atmos likewise my crankcase breather hose. I would hate to think I'm not using all available power from my beast!

Strange coincidence, I was just about to post exactly the same question as my air dump valve vents to the atmosphere. My breather pipe does connect to the air intake pipe though.

It's not a dump valve, it's a blow off valve, slightly different, just stops it over boosting, bit of a safety measure.
From memory I think it's only the syncro's that have it connected into the inlet hose from the airbox.
Leaving it open to atmosphere is fine.
breather hose however should be routed into the inlet pipe.

I'll go with the Syncro comment, having recently removed a completely genuine 1.6TD from the back of a Syncro - it's amazing the amount of..... well just STUFF that was added to the Syncro engine to do..... well, things I suppose.
Thankfully most of it can be put on the ground and left there with no ill effects on the vehicle - I swear there must have been some tinware designer VW couldn't get rid of after Aircooled finished production (union rules or something, gotta be- 'I know, we can't sack him, so we'll get him to design a box to go all around the engines.' ........ 'now we have a box around the engines we'll need a cold air blower to cool the turbo - wow another job for the tinware guy!'
