1.6td with new turbo, smokey

Hi all

Got a 1.6TD fitted in a syncro. It originally had a JX but spat a cambelt and a replacement JR was sourced. This was then rebuilt and a new head fitted.

It has done 30k miles since the rebuild. Recently had a brand new turbo fitted. Also had the fuel pump checked over and retimed.

Now all this was before i bought it so i'm going by the receipts and what the previous owner told me.

It runs fine most of the time, doesn't overheat.

The problem i have is intermittent smoking, worse when cold but still smokes when warm. Smoke is blue or black but a bit hard to tell. Sometimes it is very smoky, sometimes it isn't, that is the weird thing.

There are drips of oil on the rubber hose between the turbo and the inlet manifold.

After a long, hot run i also get a problem where it stalls.

It's using a bit of oil. Could this be a problem with a leaking seal inside the turbo?

Any idea where i should start trying to fault find it?

Cheers
Gary

Hi guys

I'm still suffering with a smoky engine problem. Solved the stalling problem, new fuel filter.

I thought it might be an injector problem so i put a new set in along with 4 new glow plugs and it hasn't made any difference.

Cold starting is improved (the glow plugs i pulled out seemed fine) bit it still seems to not fire properly on one of the cylinders for a few seconds and blows blue-grey smoke. A blip of the throttle and it clears.

When i pulled the injectors the cylinder closest to the bulkhead seemed a bit carbon filled and black while the others were clean. I put new flame washers in.

Smoke is blue under light load but accelerate hard and it blows black. It is not quite as smoky once warm but still unacceptable. It is using some oil.

If it sits idling in traffic and i start off you get a blue cloud which would suggest valve guides but the engine and head is a recon and the turbo is new.

There is also a strange stuttering whistling noise like a small hole in the exhaust or something yet i can't find one and it doesn't happen all the time. That one has me stumped. There is a small valve on the inlet side of the turbo pipework going in to the manifold (dump valve?) Is that a part that cause problems?

Any other tests i can do or do i just have to pull the head off and have a look? I had a look at the Bentley and the OHC would make inspecting the valve guides impossible by just removing the rocker cover.

Cheers, all thoughts welcome.
