Hi

Thanks to those who helpep on my petrol tank issue. Apologies to ask what is probably another very simple issue but I am trying to find out the correct oil to fill my 1987 1.9 DG code Wasserboxer engine (petrol).

I am about to embark on a 3000 mile maiden European voyage so thought an oil and filter change is a good idea.

I have tried to research this via the wiki and other sites but there seems to be a lot of different advice. At the moment I seem to be reading that I should use 15/40 Semi-synth.

Is this correct and is there any specific type to look for? Anything I could pick up at Halfords or GSF? (open today!)

Thanks as always.

Hi there,

The correct oil grades are the following:-

- 15W40 or 15W50 mineral oil (temperatures above -15°C)

- 20W40 or 20W50 mineral oil (temperatures above -10°C)

From a couple of hundred thousand miles driven in a wbx..
15w40 or 15w50 oil of a normal oil, like vw's own Quantum (15w40) or Castrol GTX 15w50 (not sure if its actually available anymore now though, which is a shame)
or a 20w50 if you have noisy tappets or expect to be seeing some higher ambient temperatures..
Never found a semisynth that is in those grades so cant comment on that.. But dont use tesco's etc cheap stuff, it needs to meet API SG as a minimum and AH/SJ or poss SL ok, but I would personally avoid any rated to SM.... they really dont have the levels of protection our old engines require..
