Ok, so I've read the wiki.
I think my problem is with the flasher relay (indicators don't blink; the hazards do; Green LED in dash is constantly lit when indicator arm is up or down)
How do I change one out? where can I get one from?

EMMA - HELP!

Boyfriend has just said I've got to mention that the when indicating left, it doesn't self-cancel and could that have blown the relay (I don't think so, but he'll get hump if I don't mention it)

The first thing to check is the wiring to the relay and indicator stalk for any broken wires. A blown relay in this case is very unlikely (they very rarely fail anyway). If the relay was faulty the hazzard lights would not work either.,

Indicators not self-cancelling is a sign that the indicator stalk is on its way out (this happened to my 1300 beetle and it shattered on me). These are availabe from Just Kampers at 23.50. It could be possible that the indicator switch its self is falling to bits.

A new relay can be easily bought from places like GSF, VW Heritage etc since they are a standard beetle indicator relay. Don't use the Just Kampers ones since the green LED on the dash does not go out when the indicators are being used.

As the hazards still work I doubt if relay is at fault.
The power supply for the indicators goes through the hazard switch, that or a poor connection at fuse 11 could well be the culprit.

Thanks guys. I must have read the wiki wrong as I'm sure it suggested the relay to be at fault if the hazards worked.

I'll check out fuse 11 and the wiring tomorrow.

Sorry - wasn't the wiki. I think it must have been the haynes manual that told me the relay would be at fault if the hazards flashed!

i had this problem and it turned out to be just a fuse.

Squire - my fuses are of an early type (bullet sort of shaped, with a visible wire that runs from top to bottom - ceramic I am told ). I have checked them all and some look ok, but on others the "wire" seems to get very thin in the middle. Is this a problem or are they fine?

I have no handbook with this van. The fuses I have found are all in the dash - under/in glovebox area. Are there anymore to be found elsewhere?

I don't know which one might be the one for the indicators, but I have an "empty" slot - it has connections coming out the back of it, so I'm just wondering if the fuse was removed? If so, anyone "hazard" a guess at its rating (see what I did there)

Do NOT rely on a visual check with the fuses. Take them out and check for corrosion on the ends where they sit in the "brass holders". I know from experience that you can be fooled by a visual check!

Found brickwerks website (now in my favourites!)
Found out from there that fuse socket 11 houses the indicator fuse. Low and behold - empty. Put in new fuse. Now have indicators! Also found that the horn fuse wasn't there (have air horns installed instead) - populated that with a fuse! Now have a working steering wheel horn.
