hi especially to any central scottish forumites i'm looking for a nice site near ft william toilet essential, hook ups if poss, views of eiffel tower,ben nevis etc very welcome!!any help i'd be most grateful. thanks sassenach tezza.

few nice campsites around fort W. Most organized is about two miles into glen nevis. shop, restaurant/pub e.t.c. sits right at the base of Ben Nevis. If you like a bit of walking nice drive along the glen following river nevis. car park at end (rough camped there couple of times no probs) really nice walk up to a big hanging meadow waterfalls e.t.c. The area was used as the 'village setting' in braveheart.

thanks again mate i think glen nevis will probably do us ,this may be the site i tented at in 1995 when me and my 10 year old did ben nevis, he's 23 now and i've had a heart attack since but i might still try it again. regards tezza

I would reccomend a stay in Glencoe, it's stunning. About a 14 mile drive to Ft. William.

I stayed in the campsite in Invercoe, had clean Showers/toilets and Hook up. There is also a Caravan & Camping Club site there. However if your a bit more of a hardcore camper then Red Squirrel is really good

Will agree with glencoe not much actually in glencoe itself but some stunning scenery and views and the fresh fish for dinner if you can be bothered to go catch them is nice .... i spent 4 days there in a tent last year and it was brilliant... and fort william was nice too me my dog and the ex gf loved it... going to take the campervan up there this year back to where i stayed last year as it was so good and very decent value for money .

Did you go to the Clachaig Inn?

We had a really good night in there.

unfortunately not did a lot of walking and fishing tho was good fun ... hopefully do more next time i go there

cheers mate at my age perhaps softcore is nearer the mark ,although in my "yoof" i hardcored with the best of them!!!

I stayed at Invercoe last wednesday night. The facillities are good and the shower was most welcome. The only problem was the weather was muggy and warm which meant midges. It was so bad in the evening that people were walking round with nets on their heads. We got half eaten alive by the damn things. If you are up that way then try going over to Mull and staying at either Killechronan or Calgary bay. Both are by the sea and Killy (5 per night) has a toilet block with hot water but no shower and Calgary(free) has a toilet nearby. Killy was fantastic, just light a camp fire and watch the sunset, the mountain tops going red and in the morning the Fish Eagles getting their breakfast.

It's ashame that the North of Scotland suffers at the hands or should I say suckers of the midges.

Is there any campsites that have invested on those Midge machines?

The one i stayed at just outside glencoe or was it in gelncoe had one of them modge machines but they just didnt work lol.... then i went into the local shops and saw them all selling some avon spray on skin lotion on and it puzzled me i eventually asked one of the shop keepers had they all turned over a Avon delivery truck and then they revealed they all use that stuff to keep the midges at bay i think its called avon so soft its like a moisturising oil that you spray on and it works a treat... i will find the bottle of it i have in my bags some where and get the proper name of it and let you know...

And i highly reccomend the chippy van that parks up opposite the petrol station there ...

They reckon you should have the Sun behind you when you take a photo. Thought I'd go for it the other way round. This was at 10pm on Sunday night on Spring bank holiday weekend on the front at Troon.

the midge repellent (skin moisturiser) is called skin so soft it seems to work and is used by the army!!. If midges real bad (in places they will bite through a tin roof to get to you, thinking glen etive) go coastal. They still about but nowhere near as bad.
