Didn't VW provide SDP with engines for them? thats how SDP ended up making the T3 syncro in some sort of deal for engines.
Pinz are made in the UK at the moment aren't they?

Yes VW provided SDP with the 6 cylinder TD and yes they are currently being made in the UK (owned by the yanks now though)

caught an old 'fifth gear' episode on Dave the other day and they had one of these on. didnt realise they were being made in britain for a time and came right hand drive. 60-70k for a civi version, army units were in the hunderd's
i looked at one for a camper conversion for a while but they were all old ex-army and lefties for my price bracket.

They still use VW engines, They moved onto the 5cyl when VW scrapped the six. Early Pinz's use Aircooled petrols of steyrs own design, all others use some form of VW turbo diesel based on the contempory LT. Nowerdays they are all automatic too, though I'm not sure who's box that is.
I once herd the new 5cyl auto gets to 60 with a full load in exactly the same time as the old 6cyl did empty! Due to their long service life there still aren't that many factory diesels in privete hands so they hold their value. Also the long life still makes them resionably economical over 20 years compaired to a landy which don't last so long without rebuilding (which they do) - you'll be surprised how expenice a humble Land Rover Defender XD (wolf, army spec) actully is - would have thought 40-50k! LR never bothered to offer the XD on the civvy market as no one would pay the extra for it (they are fairly reengineered) so its dificult to work out its actual cost. The Pinz ofcourse was built with that in mind to start with rather than a beafed up light agricultural 4x4.
Think they moved production to the UK around the start of this decade due to the british army omong others wanting large orders despite SDP wanting to sease production, presumably to make more crappy BMW X3's or something.

Went on Safari to Kenya a few years ago, the game lodge we stayed at had one, I was chuffed as a very chuffed thing. My dream fleet'd be a LT 4x4 (tipper body), G500, Syncro Caravelle, Pinzgauer and a Mog (right handy them PTOs). Got none of the above at the mo, used to own a G, hoping to own a Syncro at some stage.
