My task - I am in the middle of replacing the clutch on my 2.1i 5 speed (first job on my first T25, diving straight on in!) and have spotted that I need to replace the boot on the gearshift shaft coming out of the gearbox attaching to the gearshift linkage.

My problem - the nut holding the gearshift lever to the shaft is totally battered and my socket spanner can't get any purchase. Also the thread on the shaft looks as though even if I could get the nut off the thread would get knackered in the process.

My question - if I was to try taking the nut of and end up stripping the thread will I be able to change the gearshift shaft easily or am I going to be totally screwed?

Hi mate, have you tried a six point socket and not a 12 point? that might do it, it shouldn't be massively tight. otherwise, if you undo the two bolts holding the shift rod brkt to the gearbox , and drop it down a bit, you should be able to get the new boot on like that. make sure you put it back on the same side of the gearbox flange it was on tho, or you'll get allsorts of gear selection probs!

Try drilling a series of closely spaced holes along the nut length (drill only 'til you reach the threaded bit). Pack behind the nut/shaft and split nut with a cold chisel, you will then be able to get the nut off without causing further thread damage...or if you have access to a oxy/acetelyne set heat the nut up and remove using suitable grips...but take precautions.

Once the nut is off (it's possible the threads will clean up whilst you are unscrewing the old nut), clean up the threads and fit a new nut

Cheers guys, didn't even think of a six point socket, will give them all a go. Had thought of drilling it off but knowing what I'm like with a drill will leave that one till last!
