1.6 td steering problems

Hello all, my 1.6 td multivan is making some bad noises when turning the steering wheel. I've been under it and found what I think is the culprit. There is a universal joint just before the steering rack (power steering) and when twisted by hand it makes a clunking sound. It looks fairly simple to replace but has anyone encountered such a fault? I would like to know if there is anything I should consider before ordering the part and starting work. I have tried JustKampers for the part but had no luck should I try GSF or main dealer?
Also the brackets that hold the silencer to the engine keep snapping due to vibration i guess is there anything i can do to stop this?

Many thanks for your assistance.

Simon.

Personally I'd jacking the van up to take the weight off everything and then checking all the steering parts closely. If you feel it is an external component this may have to be removed and looked at in detail
The UJ's have been known to fail as have the rubber donut joints fitted lower down the steering shaft.

Exhaust brackets ? do you mean the silencer strap brackets ? JK sell these but they are a bit pricey @ 20 quid a piece, for that sort of money I'd hope they were of reasonable quality.

The brackets are the ones that connect the silencer to the sump on one side and to the engine on the other. I went to GSF but they said it's a main dealer part as is the steering UJ. By the time i'd found a main dealer the parts dept was closed, the inconsiderate bar stewards.

Thanks for the quick reply.
