Hello All,

I hope someone here can help me as I've been unable to help myself through trawling the forums or looking through the wiki.

I'm considering purchasing a T25, it would be my first van, and I'm trying to get a feel for insurance costs. As such, I've been looking online for quotes but I can never find the van in the insurance companies drop down lists? What's it called? The one I'm looking at is a 1984 "westy" 1.6 Diesel Pop top I believe? I also understand it could be called a T3 these days but neither of these are available on the likes of tesco compare or ecarinsurance...

Also, it would be a second vehicle for me to be used for leisure purposes only so is there any special type of insurance? I'm just passed the ripe old age of 25 so insurance shouldn't be too bad. I have 3 years no claims but they're used on my normal car so can't use them on this and don't want to end up paying through the nose for insurance for something that's not going to be used that often.

If i am correct, which i rarely am...a T3 is a German one (mine is), a T25 is a UK one.

I am with Adrian Flux..pain in the backside, take payments when they shouldnt, promise to return it, they do..they take it straight again, im down in cash for over a month for which i cant afford.

I got mine MOT a month ago, flew threw, then next day got hit by a drunk driver and written off, now they are being pricks and saying it was worth nowt....even though it was totally solid German example so no salty rust attack. said 500quid at first, now gone to 1500quid..

Im wanting to buy it back, fix it, but in the mean time get another old BMW, then use the camper as a 2nd vehicle.

that's correct you rarely are! a t3 or a t25 it's the same thing, the Ts are the types of van, t2 bing bay, t3 being a t25, t4, t5 you see!

the bottom line is that they are all different models of the VW transporter van, like mk1 golf or mk3 golf.



for insurance you are looking for

VW transporter 1984
1600 diesel

you will then be asked for a body type, on the main ones like tesco, ecompare etc, they will have the variations of door combinations but nowt for the roof!

you'd be better off going to a specialist, like flux or HIC, i had mine with them as a 21yr old and it cost £300 fully comp, that was with chaucer classics, 10k ltd milage, but did get £2k of contents cover!

i've heard good and bad about flux, they don't seem to fair all the time when it comes to paying out so get an agreed value, but on the other hand £500 for joules' van seemed more than fair, let alone £1500!!!

When I looked round for insurance none of the "car" insurance places listed it at all because it's classed as a commercial, and the insurance company I was with refused to even consider it (I lost quite a bit of money cancelling my policy as it was only about a month old).

You need to look for specialist camper insurers, such as HIC/Adrian Flux (same company now I believe) - there are some others but I can't remember which. Google will help there. Or check in the Garage to see who others are insured with.

The logbook states the model, I am with LV and insured as a 'Caravelle' but I had to explain that it was a camper/motorhome conversion. No problems other than the contents are not covered. SAGA will also insure all motorhomes/campers with personal contents and fixtures covered but I think they have an age restriction.

The van I was looking at was on ebay and turned out to be a fraudster, shame really as it looked like a bargain! (Obviously!). Luckily I can spot them a mile off!

Sadly, it means I'm back to the drawing board to find something else. It's a bit of a challenge as I'm on a tight budget but I'm sure something will turn up! Still trying to figure out which ones it's possible to put roof bars on though as need space for a canoe up there!

Some insurances like HIC are a flat rate policy and don't need or give a no claim discount.
And like DiscoDave say it's also called a VW Transporter.

Trouble with fraudsters it's the thick ones you can spot a mile off it's the clever ones you have to be carefull of.

This was pretty clever to be honest... that said, who on earth buys a vehicle without looking at it first? I've been scammed before by someone and that WAS a good scam... that said, he got arrested, time in prison and I got my money back!

Not found another van yet unfortunately but I'll keep looking!
