How is the indicator self-cancelling supposed to work? Mine never has.

I had the steering wheel off last might to fix & lubricate the dodgy indicator switch. I can see the dog on the back of the wheel, but it doesn't engage with anything in the switch - there's clearly something missing. Without anything to go on I can't envisage how it's supposed to work so that I can fix it.

Note the springy bit around 3 O'clock (zoom in), those black bits the spring goes to get in the way of the lump on the wheel so they cansel the switch when the wheels turned in the other direction or get out the way without jamming when turned towards the indicated direction.

If yours has bits missing completely you'll probubly need a replacement switch, not sure where you'd find one though .

OK, cheers for that. I was hoping it might be something I could fabricate in the workshop, but perhaps not.

My switch is very worn; the contacts have been soldered (by a previous owner). I re-did that yesterday and gave it a liberal but careful smear of vaseline, and it's working quite sweetly now, apart from the cancelling. I'll leave it now until it gives up again then I'll replace it, since it's not exorbitant!

I must say fixing the centre horn push was fun (previous owner had fitted a dsahboard button and I like my horn to hand!), as the column earth had failed somewhere. Done it though!

Has it got the standard steering wheel fitted or something else?
Aftermarket or those from Mk1 golfs and Polo's, require the switch gear raising by about 10mm in order for the self cancel to touch and work correctly.
