1990 1.6TD smoky and lumpy start

hi

This is a fairly recently recon'd engine, runs beautifully when warm but when cold chucks out loads of blueish smoke and doesn't seem to turn over very smoothly. Took it up my local garage, they replaced a glow plug and cleaned out the injectors. It was fine then for a couple of weeks, no smoke at all and smooth running straight away.

But then the problem came back. Have spoken to the man, he reckons it might be changes in diesel fuel (less sulphur?) causing problems with lubrication in the injectors, causing in turn diesel to accumulate when it is off?

Any views would be welcome...

When you say changed A glowplug, how many got changed? There are 4 and they all ware roughly together (asuming they were fitted as a set). If one fails the others probubly won't be far behind so even if the one at fault is replaced you'll be back to lumpy starting when the next one goes, probubly soon after. Change the lot together and enjoy fault free preheating for the next couple of years*.

*other parts of the heaterplug system may fail within that time  .

Just spoke to them - they changed all four glowplugs

Gonna try a bit of bio diesel in the tank - garage and others report the latest ultra-low sulphur diesel can shrink the rubber seals in the injectors, and a bit of bio diesel might sort it - I will report back...

Try a can of diesel injector cleaner. see if that helps. Mine runs fine on any diesel that I put into it (not fille dit with bio-diesel though, although there will be around 5% in every gallon I put in), these older engine designs will run on just about anything without many probs. If it runs fine once warmed up, then look for something else. Glow plugs can fail, even from new.
