1.6 D Dipstick problem

Well sorry to only post on here when I have a problem.....its been some time...... anyway had a lovely few days in Wales only for the van to throw a wobblie!
1983 1.6d had her a few years now but when I bought her the previous owner had wrapped insulation tape around the top of the dipstick where it pushes in to the threaded part of the filler cap.
Anyway checked my oil and fortunately pulled in about a mile down the road to a shop to find that oil had pi**ed everywhere! Doh checks the dipstick and its very loose in the cap, so pushes it in ,only to stop a mile up the road to check for the same thing to have happened!
Anyway topped the oil up again and gaffered the dipstick in to the top of the filler end of prob...
So finally (thank the Lord they say) the question are you 'meant' to check the oil by pulling the dipstick from the tube without un threading the filler cap?
If so why is my dipstick very loose?
Is there meant to be a gasket or o ring?
2nd question..... I know a little about dervs so ......bare with me..... on the injectors you have spill of pipes but one inj is capped off with a little rubber bung. Mine keeps splitting and therefore derv spits out and smokes on the engine I have replaced the bung/cap but it still keeps happening even after very few miles any suggestions?
Daft questions by the terminally daft.

it is meant to have an o ring at the top, pop to your local hardware shop to get a correct sized one.

Louey, where is the o ring meant to be?
There is an o ring but it is in a recess which if I remember correctly is about an inch or so down the dipstick?!
Hows the engine working out?
Will try to post a pic in daylight to see if I have something missing!!
Ta for the reply dave

I think I just added an extra one so that the dipstick is snug and doesn't move.

My van is running fine now, I had a friend relplace the core plug and bled the coolant system, also found the source of a electrical connection that was loose so no more starting problems and cut outs

Buy a genuine VW blank end for the leak off pipe, the aftermarket ones are sh!t.
They are £1.28 from memory.

Is your engine breather blocked? it shouldn't be tipping oil out unless theres either too much in it or there is excess crank case pressure.

WHS^^ I get through so many of those return pipes and bungs it is just a luck thing sometimes they last a year sometimes a day, I guess it is the price we have to pay for every thing being made in China.
