would it do any harm to bench run it via an electric motor very slow
to settle the rings in and get the oil circulated?

why ?

and yes , probably , i doubt you'd get enough rpm to get the oil to flowing and it would be cold ...

Have you filled the oil pump with oil?? all lubed well on assembly?

May or may not have benefits.. but I would fit the engine and start it in the vehicle... (if I didnt haver a test bed to fit it too)

Tony, I turned our's over on the starter a few times with the coil disconnected to try to lubricate things before ignition.

Still sounded like a bag of spanners though

Take it steady, Ian.

That was a dead 1.9 issue .... and never did or will get any better.

Shell UK are looking into the circumstances of both engine's sad demise .... the supplier has already agreed the 'coincidences' are somewhat 'unfortunate' and having done ~70,000 miles on the oil they recommended it seem's hard to explain why one barrel of oil should differ so dramatically (and catastrophically)
