Different sizes valves.
I'm just getting set up with AMC, the cylinder head people, I was perusing their parts disc the other day and I was just looking at VW heads in general, thinking that it would be dead easy as x is the same as y etc and not so!
I didn't realise 1.9l and 2.1l heads were different either.

I've spotted one in a scrappy with twin carbs on it and was wondering if they would fit my CU engine

Someone must have fitted them, as stated the CV was injection.
is it a left hooker?
CV code was for the US only as far as I know.

Heads could be CV or CU depending on how long it been here and if the engine has been apart...
If the carbs are in good nick grab em... with manifolds and linkages etc...

Get the engine and box if they are still there, gearboxes command a good value, and everyone is always after 2.0l bits as most of it is obsolete.

No its RHD. Was burnt out in the cab. I took the nsr radius arm from it today (had loads of fun with a hacksaw) oh! and two working gas struts. By the way the sliding door is there and has virtually no rust on it if anyone is interested.

Simon if you're still there. Regarding the rear trailing arm, is it possible to remove the whole hub and drive shaft assembly as one by undoing the four 22 mill. bolts behind the backplate?

Yes.
