more likely to be valve stem oilseals if its just on startup.
either way i wouldn't worry too much if it isn't using too much oil.

cheers for the advice

I was a bit worried as i only got the van this morning and after describing the symptoms to a couple of mechanics they said it could be the piston rings and i'd be looking in the region of £700 plus to repair.

sorry i should rephase that ,the van smoke's on start up and gets better when warm not clears when warm so it is still smoking just not the batman style smoke screen when i first pull away and every time i accelerate a puff of smoke comes out of the exhaust also on the back door of the van there is oil splats so i am losing oil out of the exhaust do you think this is the rings?? or has anyone experienced this
Thanks again for your advice.

Sounds like the turbo is leaking, remove the pipework to check.

if the turbo is leaking will i need to buy a new one or will it be just a case of replacing parts, also if the valve seals have gone can they be replaced in situ or will i need to take the engine out and the heads off
