This happend on our last camping trip and I am not sure what to do about it.

the normal noisey tappets, then after about 8 miles going uphill, it felt like it was dying and banging, even as if the back was wobbling, I thought it was the driveshaft then for the next two miles on flat road if I put my foot down it appeared to knock quite badly with the back end moving, then disappeared for the other 50 miles and did not return two days later on the return journey, I did top the oil up when I got to the campsite.

Neither, its almost certainly a CV joint on its way out

Next time it knocks try dipping the clutch. If the knocking stops then as campervanman says it's a CV joint

uneven engine can cause air filter to knock against the engine bay under load Just to make doubly sure check the resistance accross the HT leads, this one threw me for ages chasing suspected mechanical faults. resistance should be 6000 +- 1400 Ohms

but would that make the back end of the camper feel like it was on a buckled wheel.

cv joints..? as gearbox end or wheel end..? do I need to sort it now or will it gradually rear its ugly head overtime.. I am going camping in stratford-on-avon in a couple of weeks and need to work out if I can make the hills?
