Flapping choke plate - 2L Aircooled

Hi there - my first post and I'm hoping to get a bit of advice.
Attempted to start the van (1982 2L Aircooled) today after it had been resting for nearly a fortnight. It was reluctant to go, so I removed the air filter and tipped a small amount of petrol into each carb and tried starting again. This time it started fine but the choke plate in the right-hand carb was flapping around noisily and the carb appeared to be spitting. There was also a bit more smoke than normal coming from the exhaust. The sound was quite like the noisy hydraulic lifters on the wiki. Left-hand carb looked fine.
A bit concerned, I didn't leave it running for long. Checked pipes running to the carbs and they seem alright. Does the engine just need to run for a bit to calm down or should I be checking other things?
Cheers, Neil.
