What Tyres?

Hi,
Can anyone give a recommendation for replacement tyres for my 1991 Westy Cali LHD? I currently have Semperit 205/70 R14 reinforced, but need one replacing and apparently Semperit has discontinued this model!! Needless to say safety comes before looks (just!) but it would be nice to have a matching set. Thanks, Matt.

On standard rims they should be 185 R14C .... the 'C' being for Commercial and therefore they would be 8 ply and rated for our heavy vans.
Clearly you have a low-profile option ... I would SERIOUSLY encourage you to make sure they're suitably rated.
Ian.

Hi Ian, Thnks for the reply. Not sure about profile, these were on when I bought the van & I thought were standard VW factory fitted alloys(?). I would add a pic I've taken for you to take a look at if I new how to add it to this message(!!). Also, the description on the side of the tyre is as follows: 205/70 R14 97R 6ply tread, 1 ply sidewall, reinforced, 730kgs max weight. Matt.

The 205/70 r 14 C (6ply) are fine for it, VW did indee fit those from the factory..
I am sure I found some somewhere, let me have a look..
Alternative would be to fit the 185r14C tyres, now you would have to fit a min of a pair and they would then have to go on the front axle..
IIRC someone on here used 195/75r14C tyres when it came to it.. as that was as close as he could get..

Thanks TMT.....I've been scouring the net & so far have come up with nothing!!!! Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. Apparently Michelin Agilis light truck tyres are meant to be fine but I cannot see them in the size I need, maybe I need to go to the alternative sizes you suggest.....this is safe I presume? Matt.

Nexen SB700 205/70/14 - load rating of 100 - about £50 quid fitted.
Ordered mine through Blackcircles.com although there must be other places.
Could have bought 185s, 195s or 205/80s but wanted to stick to the OE sizes

I priced the michelins from Costco and then went to my local ATC and asked if they would match the price - and they did. They're excellent tyres.
I needed the 2 front replacing and iirc Costco would only change the rear wheels for some reason. I would have had to swap the front to rear before I went if you know what I mean. No such probs at ATC though. Can't remember the reason.

Thanks for all the advice folks. It looks like the Michelins win the day.

i used 195/75R14C continental vanco's on my Carat alloys ( mine had the same semperits on it that you mention) if you go on one of the tyre size calculators, you'll find they are within 2 percent of the diam. of the 205/70's . wanted to do this rather than change to the more common 185R14C size, to keep the speedo reading properly
the vans that had alloys fitted as std from the factory with 205/70 tyres have a differently geared speedo than those with 185/R14's which most had as std.
there are small numbers at the bottom of the speedo face, think my Carat has '400' on it most vans have '850' written on it, don't know how much difference it would make in reality to the speedo reading if you put the different section height tyres on tho.

Hello
Just found this thread after doing a search as I really need some advice on tyres. I have searched the wiki, which is very impressive, and despite learning more about tyres than I ever thought I would(!), I am still slightly confused by the options and am having problems finding a tyre supplier.
I have a 1989 Westy Club-Joker LHD and the tyres are 205/70 R14 97R. Got a puncture on one of the back tyres and another could also do with replacing. Matt, did you find a supplier eventually? Or does anyone else know of a UK supplier that does these tyres?
All help appreciated! thanks!

Just had my new tyres fitted today - from Tyres Express.com - they do a mobile fitting service and I must say their customer service was absolutely brilliant. I would really recommend them.
Thanks again for the recommendation.
another job crossed off the long list of van bits to get fixed!

Well I have always said it would be better to have a castrophic blow out at the front rather than the rear.
(tyres before any discgusting mikey taker pipes up)
This started a furious argument on another forum to which I "contribute" My argument seems to be supported by Costco's stance which I believe reflects recomentations from an official trade organisation. Any takers?
