Starter motor stayed on - solenoid problem?

Hi, I have a T25 1600cc Diesel and I'm a complete beginner regarding vehicle maintenance.

A couple of times I have tried to start the engine and the starter whirred but did not engage first time - did second and subsequent times!

Yesterday I drove it a short distance (5mins), seemed to be no problems at all. When I switched the engine off (and removed the keys!) the starter was still going - or had restarted as I didn't hear it while I was driving it!

I ripped open the engine compartment and wiggled the wire going to the solenoid. This seemed to stop it. I tried to start the engine and nothing...

When I returned to it after work it started straight away without me touching the engine.

I suspect that the solenoid is sticking, but -
Why would the starter not be engaging?
Does a sticking solenoid mean it needs a new one?
Can a new solenoid be purchased independently to the starter?

Thanks,

DD

I had this not so long ago.

I tested mine by connecting a wire from the spade connector (which switches on the solenoid) and touching it onto the battery.

The starter motor stayed on indicating the solenoid was sticking.

It was under warranty so i just got a new one :)
