another gear link problem

Can anyone help, i've fitted a new gearbox front mounting on my 1.9dg. I had to drop the linkages down to get the mounting bracket off, i then replaced the mounting and simply put the ball and socket back . I didnt alter anything but now i can only get all the gears if i move the linkages by hand . If i use the gearstick to 1st or 3rd it seems to travel too far back , the ball comes out of the socket very slightly and locks up. I've tried the support flange on both sides of the housing but it doesnt seem to make any difference. Which side should it be on?. Help please....

a common mistake is to bolt the rearmost linkage holding braket onto the wrong side of the flange on the gearbox housing, making the linkage 10mm out, which is enough to mess the whole job up.......

which side should the bracket be on ? and surely its only a guide for the linkage to run through how can it affect the adjustment or am I missing something? thanks.

goes on the front, the rubber boots need space to compress, if fitted to the rear there isn't room to compress.
Top tip is to push the socket up fully when nipping up the bolts to take out slack and check the rubber gaiter that's covering the ball and socket is properly fitted too.

I,ve noticed I dont have any rubber bellows , should it have some , and what are their purpose? It has a rubber boot over the ball , but no bellows.
