'Old pattern' exhaust on Syncro?

A few years ago I needed an exhaust for my (1987) 2WD Type 25 and was appalled by the cost of the standard "plumbers nightmare" system (fiendishly designed purely to enable the fitment of a catalyst). Some research revealed that the earlier pattern (fitted to 1600 air-cooled Transporters) cost a third less and would fit straight on. I bought one of the earlier pattern ones - basically 2 J-tubes, 2 s-shaped tubes and a transverse silencer - and had no trouble whatsoever.

Now that my Syncro is getting ready for an exhaust, I ask myself the question - will that old pattern system fit on the Syncro? I can't really see why not. The earlier pattern in stainless would be a very cost-effective solution!

Has anyone had any experience of this on a Syncro??? :?:

Cheapskate.....

No its not a system from the Aircooled.. its actually the early wbx system..
Yes it will fit, but the silencer will be low.. (for a syncro) VW did in fact fit the early system at the start.. but they had some nifty little 45 deg bend/adapters at the 3 bolt flange to kick the silencer up out the way..

And proud of it...

Amazing the knowledge that resides on this forum! My Syncro never does any really demanding off-roading so I could probably get away with a low-slung silencer. Me being a cheapskate and all...

Well, it sits directly out the back of the engine mounting bar.. so only you can decide if its worth the risk....

And a slight loss in power.
The later exhaust was not desighned for a kat but better performance and this also allowed an easier fitment of a kat.The ealry kat setup is even worse than all the other systems put together.

Hi Trundler,

the first syncros had a other exhaust system. They changed it 11/1985 to the later ones.

Her for comparence the pictures out of the parts catalogue. I think you can fit the old system onto the newer engines, but I've nevere seen it.

A long time I used a Aircooled 2l silencer on my 1985 syncro.

The early system uses the 2L Aircooled silencer.. you can just see the bens bits that flip the silencer up, dont think they will be available now!!!
