A coupIe of questions, please help. I have just been reading on the wiki about the joys of cv joints. This is because as I was driving along the other day I heard a horrible knocking coming out of the vicinty of my drivers side rear wheel. I have no idea if cv joints knock when they fail but a visual inspection it all seems 'ok'. The noise quietened down, then stopped then came back. Does this sound like the joint going?

Second question, I opened up the engine bay for a look around hoping for enlightenment and noticed this hose (see picture) with end chewed off. Now I am not sure where it is supposed to go, or what it achieves or anything really.

I was supposed to take the van to a welder tomorrow, do either of these things sound so critical that I should postpone driving it until they are fixed?

sorry lots of questions, as you can tell I am a novice.

I'm sure some clever bugger will identify the hose, but my eyes aint what they used to be, TOO SMALL. Also a clue as to engine type might help.

I'm sure you read about moving CV joints in and out (towards wheel and away) to redistribute the grease, A knocking joint might last 1000 miles or more, check the bolts are tight, a knocking joint can loosen them.

Looks like a carb hot air tube, is it black and bendy metal, rather than a rubber hose. If is is a thin flexible metal tube, often silver on the inside, then it is nothing to worry about, you should be able to see where it pushes onto, either the air filter or the exhaust, depending on which end it is.

Engine is a 1.9 petrol , I think the hose matches synchrosimons description, will have a go at re-attaching or replacing. 1000 miles sounds good, should be able to work within that band.

Yeah, looks like one of them pointless heat pick-up tubes off the #1 cylinder downpipe.

Is the knocking in time with wheel rotation ? Under load ? .... does sound like a CV joint.

yeah the tube seems fairly pointless, engine still sounds good!

Knocking has stopped as well, I am partly hoping that the knocking was something to do with the disconnected tube dancing with something that was rotating. I am probably clutching at straws though, when it was knocking it sounded a bit more fundamental than a thin metal tube bouncing about.

Anyway, thanks again for your help. Something tells me it wont be the last time I need it.

Just read this one. I agree looks like the hot air tubes. If it is your CV joints knocking. Don't worry, there not that bad to fit. Just replaced mine. Best done before you travel too far though. good luck
