My Son Daniel has bought himself a 1981 t25 2ltr which after running ok, has developed starting problems,
I have check the following
Fuel pump working ok
Spark plugs leads coil ect ok
Fuel getting to carbs.
Engine turns but will not fire
There is also petrol in the oil in the sump
Even after turning the engine I rechecked plugs and there bone dry no petrol present. Which I thought was unusual ??
Finally gave up and called the aa even he seemed a little stumped and finally said it could be a diaphragm problem in the carburettor.
Any advice will be much appreciated .............
Daniel is now thinking of replacing twin carb with the single Weber conversion kit any comments for or against.............
Many Thanx for looking

as long as the chokes arent stuck on then tis a fuel pump problem
i have had these were theengine floods due to chokes on , filling sump via pistons with fuel.
if these are free check/replace the fuel pump as this can leak internally and fill the sump with petrol. more common with beetles/bays.
may be worth fitting an electric pump instead, especially if your thinking of fitting a different carb

Thanx for your help...........
Just to confuse matters more .........
just thought i would give it a go after work started on the first turn of the key ............yippee me thinks,
then i realize it sounds like someone has droped a bag of spanners inside the engine
I now remember why we sold our t2.........bugger !!!
so more suggestions please before i have to sacrifice our son to the great VW GOD IN THE SKY....................
thanx for your help so far Allan...............

if it has contaminated oil, it will sound like a bag of spanners, but not for long........it will kill it right quick, no, or very little oil pressure if there is petrol in the oil................. get that oil changed asap, before running it again..... if you have changed the oil, worry not about the rattling, its the bad thin oil still in the lifters, which will take time to bleed the good un contaminated oil in...
make sure you change the filter too.......

Noisy lifters?
like Mocki sez get some 20/50 innit and whack a new filter on..
then go for a long drive

Hi its daniel here, right spent all morning and most afternoon trying to get my engine going.
2lt Aircooled, replaced leads, plugs, oil filter, checked fuel filter etc etc, got it started and its idle is the best iv ever heard it.
Thought great lets see whether it moves or not. BAD IDEA lol rolled it down the hill, put my foot on the accelrator and it died! It wouldn't start again. Then we had to push the bloody thing back up the hill!!!
Whats up with it??
P.S. on the right carb when you look into it from the top with engine running, it looks like fuel is egniting inside the carb and you can see the mini explosion inside, is it ment to do that? im not too sure it is.
On the bright side atleast I managed to get it to start this time, fixed one problem and now onto the next. lol
Any ideas?

it sounnds like an air leak!!? maybe! the carbs or inlet manifold may be leaking air which results in poor starting and running, if tou think you cant do it, take it to a garage, shouldnt cost much and at least they may tell you whats up with it. good luck and dont give up!!!!!!!

Please fill out your prifile as we can then suggest an experienced member or workshop near you (if there is one)
Your average garage wont have a clue and will take an arm and a leg and prob not fit it either.... So specialist is needed...

Have you checked the balancing pipe that runs between the carbs? it has a rubber 'T' piece to join up on the near side. These perish and create an air leak. If you can get it idleing, spray WD40 over all the pipes and the gaskets between the carbs and the inlet manifold. Also the manifold to cylinderhead. If the engine changes 'beat', speeds up/slows down, chances are there is an air leak. Then you have to find where. Once its running ok, put the back of your hand approx 4'' from the tail pipe. If you can't hold your hand there due to it being hot, the timing/ignition is not right. When an Aircooled engine is in tune the exhaust gasses are luke warm. Thats a good sign of a healthy engine. Have fun
