Wheres my 1st and 2nd gears?

Well, this week I drove into a stableyard in 2nd, as usual, reversed into a space, then when I came out ,!st and 2nd gears had disappeared! No noises, lever still slots fine, 3rd, 4th and reverse all present.
Ive checked out the linkages as per Haynes manual, bu still the same! Any Ideas?
It's a 1.9 wasserboxer 4-speed.

sounds like a bu**ered gearbox...this exact thing happened to my 5 speed.i had to replace box..

But they worked fine gonig into the yard, and the box has never been noisy. They must be in there somewhere. I was wondering about the selection mechanism INSIDE the box, are there any forks, rods or suchlike inside that may have broken or come loose? What DOES happen once the shaft gets inside the casing. I feel like taking the end off the box and looking, rather than resign myself to a new box at this stage.

The selector mechanism is a pain to get to as there's no separate cover to remove to get at it; it's all mounted inside a boss cast into the side of the 'box. It looks like it requires a complete gearbox stripdown to access it. Probably best to obtain a known-good replacement 'box from one of the nice chaps on here who recycle T25s; changing a 'box can be done in about two hours or less and it's not difficult (even I managed it...); little more than removing the driveshaft couplings, gear linkage bracket and starter motor, supporting the whole shebang on a trolley jack, removing the rear mount and then undoing four bolts to separate the 'box from the bellhousing. Lower the assembly on the jack, support the engine from beneath with another jack or a stand and then curse as the gearbox drops off the splines and onto your chest. Refitting is the reversal of removal (gaaaah), only with more swearing.

Well, The Redoutable Colin Hick Motors in York have had a peek at it, and decided that something has fallen off or come loose insoide. It isnt worth a new box, so its coming out next Monday to be looked at. Meanwhile at least the lay-up forces me to start on some of the many jobs on the 'to do' list.
Incidentally, I could not recommend Colin hick Motors highly enough.
