water/coolant pump trouble

just as i got home the pump (that was making an awful grinding noise) seems to have given up the ghost and i think started leaking not huge amounts but small puddle on the ground as i parked.
there is still quite a lot of coolant in the system and it didnt overheat (thank god)
does any one know how much a new pump for a 1.9 dg is and where to get one. is it a difficult job to fit?
I had just booked it into the garage to be looked at next week and would like to sound reasonably knowledgeable about the situation. And do you think it would be driveable to the garage about quarter of a mile down the road.

any info would be great

thanks in advance

Depends on the year. Up to 1986, the pump had the thermostat housing on it and the bolts regularly siezed in the casting which means it could be a nasty job. 2 and 1/2 hours plus

1986 onwards is much easier, but the bottom left hand nut can be a bugger in situ, as can the socket headed bolts that hold the pipes on.
Allow 2 and 1/2 hours for someone who knows what they're doing

Pumps are anything from 20 to 40 quid depending on supplier.

Pump itself is £30 from Just Kampers, as with most things on a 20 year old van IF everything comes off easily then it's not a major job ... swapped our last one in an hour and a half, BUT that'd been off before and everything went well.

To drive 1/4 mile top up the system and drive straight there ... the pump leaks out of the gland in the bottom so shouldn't lose too much over that distance.

Good luck, Ian.

They could have done .... fit a fan belt too tight and you'll soon need another water pump

Ian.

Doubt it.. unless they asked do you want a new this and that.. and you say YES.. or if they didnt fit it.. I would always fit a new pump unless it had been replaced within 6 months.. but even new ones fail.....

Early water system.. so early stat (unless someone has updated it) and thats prob why the pump wasnt changed as its a pig if the bolts shear...

Oh.. take the belt off for the drive to garage.. the pump is prob eating at the face on the engine and the new pump wont work so well if the face has been "machined" away...
