Diesel starter motor - is there a relay to switch it on?

My Starter motor stays on - even with the key removed.

I've checked the voltage at the starter motor and its because 12v stays on it after i have released the key from the start position.

Im guessing thats because there is a stuck relay or something. If there is no relay then maybe the switch at the key is knackered?

Any ideas?

My diagram is for a petrol engined model, but pretty sure the diesel will be the same.

One connection at the starter (solenoid) is direct to the battery positive.
(Large red cable) and therefore live at all times,.

The other connection (Red/Black cable)is live with the ignition switch (Key) in the 'start' position only.

The solenoid is in effect a relay.
I can't remember the actual connections on the starter/solenoid and am not going to crawl underneath to check, but that is the gist of it I believe. :wink:

So if thats the case, it looks like my ignition switch is knackered?

I guess the only way to be sure is by checking the terminal (marked 50) on the ignition switch. If it is live with no key turned, then that looks like your problem.

If someone has fitted a relay in the circuit to reduce the current through the ignition switch and the long cable run back to the starter, then the relay should be somewhere near the starter motor. I have one I fitted to my Bay, back face of the offside rear wheel arch in the engine compartment.

i am pretty sure there IS an extra relay for the starter on diesel models.

it is above the fuse box, look for the earth tags,castlelated items

above this there is a relay and fuse similar to the glowplug one.
i am sure this is for the starter from memory.
they get corroded due to damp from leaky window!
check this first!
the wires in the base should include the large red with black trace wire!

ringo, take the signal wire off the solenoid, and see if the starter stops, it may well be the solenoid , and you cant check the key switch with the solenoid signal wire connected to the solenoid anyway.......
