1Y alternator and water pump belts question

Hey all,

Right, water pump belt broke on my 1Y the other day and when i went to get another one the guys at the motorfactors said that that engine only uses one belt, not two.

Now, i'm assuming that my engine is running the same belt setup as the 1.6D engines, one belt for the water pump, one for the alternator, so my question is,

can you run one belt to drive the water pump and alternator, but also include the smaller belt from the 1.6 setup as a failsafe to run the waterpump.

What does everybody elses 1Y's run on, 2 belts or 1?

It depends on who did the conversion and what they used surely.

suppose so.

The setup look the same as the 1.6D setup but the crank pully has the 2 slots for 2 belts to go round, thats why i thought of sticking one belt on it like the spec says for the 1Y.

All the other pullys all line up well with the inside groove on the crank pully.

I've got the grooved belt system - completely different to my 1.7d.

There is only the one belt - the outer pulley wheel is for the air con or power steering pump? I took it off.

The 1Y alternator setup is sooo much better IMHO - piece of pi$$ to change belts with that spring....

But the output from the alternator W terminal is not what the rev counter or buzzer of doom circuitry is expecting, if you run a alternative alt on a T3 it throws out the rev counter readings.

ringo, cheers for that. That makes perfect sense that the outer ring was for power steering or air con. Don't no why a didn't think of it before dohh

Off to the motor factors for a bigger belt then :D

The JX setup will be much nicer to your crank pulley unless you have a modifed 1Y alternator pulley.

hey andy,

how do you mean a modified alternator pully?

what needs doing to it?

Free wheeling pulley to smooth out pulsations from alternator, makes belt last longer and hopefully prevents bottom pullet failere.

Not all the 1Y or AAZ alternators can be modifed, all the bosch ones can.

This is all new to me. I've never considered this before!

I take it a free wheeling pulley means it only turns the alternator in one direction (ie the direction of normal travel).

Makes sense.

PS - Whats a rev counter ? :)

Yes thats correct, when engine speed suddenly drops, the alternator has a delayy is slowing due to heavy rotating mass, this can be seen on JX system as slack spots visible in belt, due to ribbed belt system being tight it passes all pulsations back to the crank pulley.

bloody hell Andy... every time I get a scenario worked out to fix the van you throw a spanner in the f&*king works....

OK, so V belt driven (off crank secondary pulley) alternator is best...
