AAZ white smoke at idle

Have a van fitted with 1.9 AAZ. Engine has covered about 60K miles, about 10K of them in the van with no problems. Last week it started smoking.

Its ok when driving / on full throttle (perhaps a tiny bit of blue smoke), runs clean, but when you back off so on overrun with throttle closed it puffs... first a little bit blue, then loads and loads of white / grey smoke. Rev the engine again and it clears and the engine runs clean.

Once the van is warm, leave it idling and it pumps white / grey smoke out.

Engine isnt using oil or water, so it must be a fueling / over fueling issue?
Anyone have similar experiences?
Could is ne injector(s) or something in the pump to do with idle?

Has engine noise changed? Does it go as well?

Sounds like pump timing is retarding. Check crank pulley for any wobble when running, if it is this its dieing.

maybe obvious but it isn't getting a little of the breather from the crankcase into the induction is it?? in theory would look like over fueling or bad timing?

no the breathers are not connected to the air intake. They are piped into a catch bottle.

I will check the pulley, seen that mentioned before. Its odd it only does it when the throttle is closed.

If the timing is on the move, it will effect it at low revs the worst.

nope, no water loss at all... Its not really steam, more of a thick cloud!
