Just been cleaning and refilling my hydraulic tappets and on one I noticed this..
[IMG:800:600]http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k68/r ... oto565.jpg[/img]

On the furthest tappet away at around the 9 o'clock position you can see the clip is missing a piece and both tappets have a notch out of them which doesn't look right to me.

No other damage is apparent including the block where they sit.

What could have cased this?

Hamfistedness by previous owner/ mechanic?

Also where can I get the clips themselves?

Does it look like a "chip"?
I dont remember seeing any "cutouts" on them before...

clips... someone on here, but you have to wonder where the old one went...

could be that they are the "replacement" ones, heard a lot are poor quality.. whats the cam face look like?

Mmm... I like the eas of the hydro's but they do bother me coz they are bloomin heavy and have to have strong springs etc etc...

Replace the whole tappet ... I think GSF do them
check the push rods , make sure that they are nice and true ,, I've had one bend on me also a tappet fall to pieces ..

Why were/are you cleaning them ?

I was just cleaning and refilling them because I have the engine stripped out to this point waiting for some parts to come in so I thought I'd check.
Pushrods look ok. but they had some nasty thick dirty oil inside them.

The cut outs do look like chips yeah.

I have only checked these two so far, I hope they're not all like this cos they're not cheap to replace.

Cam face is sound.

Gonna check the rest later.

I'm wondering now if the push rod wasn't seated in the tappet?
If it had dropped down and rested on the outer edge, when the engine turned over the spring pressure would have been against this rim.
On the next revolution it popped back in?

It is regular and caused by the push rod bashing about while the tappets are filling.

Cheers Laurie.

S'funny though, it's only on the side that the head gasket has been (badly)changed before, 3 out of 4 have notches out and one has a slight mark.

On the other side all are completely intact.

Question: Do the tappets fill completely on their own when the engine is up to full oil pressure or do they have to be filled with oil beforehand for them to work?

When I took them out I could push down the cup against the spring inside but after I cleaned then filled them with fresh oil I couldn't.

Should I replace them then like T'onion says?

Cheers for expertise guys.

Rich.

Well three are showing damage like the two on the picture.
Only one has a little bit of the clip missing.
What should I do?

How come you ended up with enlightenment in your shed?

But seriously, thanks.

Would they have rattled around if they'd been filled properly first?
