anyone got a piccie of one - VW parts man reckons mine is a bodge job - the replacement he ordered for me looks really short and has a bolt head on it with a shoulder on it.

The one VW have supplied is similar but stops at the threaded bit, there isn't the shaft on the end

Sounds like the one my TD had then, think the end was blunt spike instead of the end pictured. I replaced it with a VDO temp guage but still haven't wired it up yet.

There are 2 different types, that one in the pic above, and the one that looks like a long bolt with a small hexagon head, and a long taper on the other end, the taper fits into a tapered hole in the sump. When you undo it (not all the way out, you don`t need to) the oil runs out of the rebate cast into the bottom of the sump so it flows straight down, rather than shooting out horizontally onto the rear silencer

Louey the 'shafty' bit on the end of the plug is what is I would call a fanny magnet, after a while it gets a bit hairy and collects any metal particals floating past.

Once upon a time these were a common fitment in the sumps of the BMC 'Bag 'O' Shyte' the Mini.....

HOW DARE YOU! One of the few decent motors we ever built. Where would the Italian Job be without the mini? Or my youthful days when the mini could do no wrong (well, not much), simple to fix (needed to be, it kept going wrong. OOPs, unpure thoughts of the mini) and not some silly gas-guzzler.
Anyway, the oil was shared with the engine AND the gearbox due to it's compact design, so needed something to pick up all the little bits that got worn off from both.

invoice says part no. VN 029 701 2 £2.03. Can I get one from GSF or anywhere else??

That 'Rusty Old British Crap' comment is REALLY hurtful.
Anyway I've just spent half a day grovelling under the VW dropping the tank and replacing all them rotten old leaky hoses (and find some not even connected!) and seals. Hopefully no more 'death by petrol fumes'.
Talking of the mini, if memory serves, the beloved mini had a pocket-sized petrol tank in the boot that you could whip out in 5 minutes, rather than waste an afternoon. Ho Hum.
RIP the mini (Rust into Pieces).

I must say that I think the old Mini is the worst vehicle I`ve ever had the misfortune to have had any dealings with (and the new version isn`t a lot better either)

Anyway, back to the thread. The sump bolt we`re talking about with the long taper on doesn`t have the magnet on the end, just a taper.

Any idea where I can get a proper sump bolt from? VW parts place is useless - second time they cocked up, and they find it hard to admit that the buyer actually could be right.

068 103 193 is the part number listed BUT ther is also another number listed as well, which is probably for the other type of sump bolt. The first number is for a 16mm diameter plug, the second number is for a 14mm plug, so decide which one you need and then quote that number to the parts bloke.

068 103 193 is 16mm thread (about £8.00)
029 701 2 is 14mm thread ( about £3.00)
