REALLY flooding, so much that the only way to start it is to disconnect the fuel pump and keep cranking it till eventually it starts...........any ideas where to start, or common problems

If she is really pissing fuel into the cylinders it's worth looking at the injectors. When you remove them, which is easy, just a 10mm bolt on the metal housing plate, they should not leak petrol from the nozzles when ignition on, but engine not running.

Equally again, the ecu temp sender if it's disconnected or defective will make the brain think your -30deg C and flood the old girl to get her started.

Shell V Power super unleaded or redex can help to clear the injectors.

Also, if your fuel pressure regulator was knackered it would raise the petrol pressure far above the VW 30psi. This would also cause extreme rich running. I dont know how, other than with a pressure gauge, how you would test that.

Make sure all the wires for the injection system are in good nick, and fiddle with all the connectors to get the best contact you can.

had similar with mine worked out to be the fuel pressure regukator valve, not sure how you test them though

There is a little tee piece on the fuel lines near the distributor, there is a 6mm bolt on it which when unscrewed allows the attachement of a fuel pressure gauge. Easy if you have one, which I dont. Equally swap out that part with a known working one. I did ask at vw once for the price, it was available and near £60. I didnt buy it.

Take the white wires off the nearside head and clean them up, as well as cleaning the head itself. Use a new blot to attach them and try it.
I have had that happen a number of times and in one case, it was necessary to strip the wires back and fit a new connector because the wires were perished.
