Hi all

I have an 82 Aircooled 2 litre auto T25. Have had no problems and have used it every couple of weeks for weekend fun. Having been very busy have not used it for about 4 weeks. Came to start it and nothing just a click from the motor. Lights come on dash and headlights dim when I turn the key to stage 2 ignition then go bright again when I turn it back to stage 1. Have also tried jump starting it to no avail so pretty sure it's not the battery. Figured probably seized starter motor so tried rocking van back and forth to free with no joy. Also tried wacking starter with hammer but must admit to being a bit nervous about hitting it too hard. My question is this, as van is parked behind my house it is quite difficult to move onto the road to try and jump start but not impossible, Is it worth trying to jump it if my other attempts to free starter haven't worked. Is jumping more likely to get it going and as I live on a hill should be able to get a good run. Lastly should I have auto box in neutral or drive if I attempt this? Sorry for the long rant but wanted to give as much info. as possible.

One more thing, van did always making a high pitched whirring sound when starting for a split second ? Could this have been a sign of a starter motor on the way out???

As far as I know it's not possible to bump start an automatic, and you're not supposed to tow it very far or fast....

Hit the starter fairly hard, near the flywheel end where the starter and solenoid join... It's quite tough to hit it really hard up there anyway.

Check the battery terminals are really tight.
