Sticking a metal base mirror to windscreens - what glue ?

Not for a T3 but it is a VW ( Scirocco )

The mirror has a small flat smooth plate that contacts the windscreen glass.
It looks like the original method of mounting it was some kind of glue.

Supa glue doesn't set.
EvoStick contact adhesive worked best, but it still fell off after a few days.
Epoxy is no good for these types of surface.


We have tried 2 different makes of the sticky pads from Halfords etc, sold for this purpose - they are rubbish.

Any thoughts folks ?

Silicone glue is what you need

Double sided sticky pad / mirror pad.
Just make sure its clear of grease on both surfaces

Err is that that gloopy sticky stuff in a big tube gun thing ?

Done that - used Acetone on a clean cloth the second time, really thoroughly - it wobbled around when driving and fell off after a week.

Doubled sided tape bonded correctly is best on grease free surface. When ya fit it 'wobble' so it pushes the air out and creates suction & it shouldn't move for ages..

I'm with Gunslinger on this one. We often used a GE branded RTV (room temperature vulcanising) silicone adhesive on my last job for similar bonds. This one..........
here at Maplin......... looks as if it may be ok. Probably find something like it in most DIY outlets.
I think garages refer to it as 'Gorilla Snot', when in a cartridge gun.

Try No More Nails Exterior double sided pads or tape, available from hardware stores such as Wilko. The best is 3M VHB (very high bond) tape but its expensive and only available in large rolls could try and scrounge some from a bodyshop.

It helps if the glass and mirror are warm when you stick it on, if they are cold then the tiny amount of condensation (invisible) that forms just before you push it on stops a good bond.

The warmth also helps to let the adhesive get a little more "intimate" with the substrate....

Yep - last time I tried, I waited till a warmish day and got Gills hair dryer on the screen before I stuck the Halfords double sided mirror attaching pad on.

The mirror had been sitting on a central heating rad for 1/2 hour before hand ( all this because it said what Dave said on the packet )

It seems the contact area is a bit small for this method of attachment, when driving the "give" in the pad allows the mirror to wobble a bit, and after a week or so it falls off.

I reckon I need a thin glue ( like, but not, Super Glue )

Off now for another "Google" on it !

DO NOT USE SUPER-GLUE! I have seen more than one windscreen crack using super-glue (something to do with setting or shrinking of glue as it sets, me thinks).

It's a proper mirror sticky-pad for me every time.

Aye - I got that same warning from a guy on "Yahoo Answers" so I won't try that one again !!

The pads just don't work, the mirror wobbles around when driving and a week later it falls off. I did follow the instructions to the letter.

Apparently there is a special glue for glass but I cannot find it

and that was after phoning Halfords to ask if they sold a glue for the purpose and being told they did not. Their website said they do, so on ringing back and quoting the part No. they DO have it - The muppets wasted an hour of my time with duff info !!!!
