Does anyone know the history of this SYNCRO

I bought it after a few disscussions with the owner. There are apparently no issues with the bus apart from.

Prop has been removed due to the previous owner saying to the current owner/seller that the prop was whining as it was out of balance.

It requires new CV joints at the rear. Supplied but not fitted.

The VC is untested due to the prop not being fitted.


Some people have alluded to the fact the bus might have major issues by PM but have asked to remain anonomous.

Prop out could mean several things...
it really does need new ujs on the prop, or its lost a balance weight causing vibes..
the VC is tight and causing issues (not good, but good that it has been removed)
The front diff is noisey and witht he prop out it reduses strain on it...


Does the transmission make any noises and changing problems?

Its pretty difficult for us to tell you whats wrong or potentially wrong.. not without seeing and driving it..

Oh I am actually working in Hammersmith at the mo and if I get a weekend down here I could pop over and have a look...

£1800 for a 2.1 velle aint too bad, 2wd or not

esp if you factor in an Ebber and powersteering

As long as you're not Too fussed over 4wd, it could make a cracking daily or a good priced base for a camper......

p.s, are you Dynosoar from 8090 circa 2003 ????? :D

Hi buddy,

Yeah I am indeed that dyno and have been a T3 owner all that time since. Thanks for the wellcome back. Nice to have been remembered. :)

I am very fussed about it being a Syncro with difflocks as I am planning to get muddy with the rest of these guys. I have done all the low suspension stuff. 8)

Anyway the guy selling seems like a nice guy. I have 3 mails and messeges from people who would like to remain unnamed that there are problems with the Syncro.

The seller is taking the heater out.

1. Diff
2. VC Tight almost knackered
3. Prop and no prop bars
4. Rust, filler and stuff
5. Issue with the diff lock switches

It looks like I would be spending out on virtually rebuilding the thing.

Nightmare for me and the guy selling.

I just wasn't aware of these issues before I bid.

Sorry I would just like to point out that the seller seems like a good bloke. Very decent and staight and so I am not sure he is aware of thie issues this bus may have.

Frankly anyone buying a Syncro that's not already been sorted by an enthusiast or specialist is going to have issues to deal with.

A lot of components could have reached the end of their service life and may need replacing.

Depending on how its been used/mis-used and cared-for, you could easily need to spend another grand on top of the purchase price to get a Syncro fully sorted.

£1k is very conservative Andy.. a gearbox rebiuld will eat 2/3 and thats if it doesnt need anything extra, let alone front diff, cvs and a VC...

Tottaly agree.. if you buy a "non enthusiast" owned vehicle, you are totaly dependant on its "as seen" condition and the way its been "abused"......
The doka has a growing pile of new and refurbed bits waiting to be fitted in a few weeks... :roll:

i didnt notice anywhere that theseres supposed to be anything wrong with the gearbox is there? looks like from the link under your name on here youre advertising for a vw t25 gearbox refurb place. maybe your own company?

Er no... it was actually a responce to the comment Andy made.. I was just saying if A (no where did I mention this one needed a box) syncro needs a box then the £1k budget for "fixing" A syncro gets blown apart...

They aint new and have been used for 15+ years... some things wear out.. and replacing some parts dont come as cheap as other parts... thats all the point I was making... I know nothing of this vehicle and never said I did..

So "1. Diff"......... could mean anything, front rear, noisey etc etc.......

Aidan is now a mate, he was sick of the poor gearboxes he and some other members had paid to be done "professionally"... so decided he would give it a go..
My syncro gearbox was the first "customer" box.. As I wasnt happy to spend a lot of money on a box that may have had a single bearing changed and some new gaskets (that doesnt constitute a rebiuld in my book) I prefered to get Aidan to do it and change the worn (if poss servicable) parts... My box changed perfectly but was very noisey as tyhe main bearing was on its way out...
So if you need a box, he's the man to talk too (rather than your local place that does ford etc gearboxes all day long)... thats all..

Dont suppose new member joined on the 4th, Sync25 with 1 post could poss be the current owner??? I am sure just a coincidence....

It looks like quite a tidy van, It was cheap enough that's for sure.

I would refit the prop & take it for a spin.

Due to being awkward & expensive to fit, people tend to think the worse. I was trying to sell my Syncro when the engine knocked the big ends out. A potential buyer was put off by scaremongers thinking if he can't road test the van then the gearbox & diff must be kippered too.

In reality, once the new engine was fitted, it was good to go again.

Even if you have to spend a bit getting it up together, I reckon it's still a good buy.

Hey I didn't want to start a mass debate and arguement.

Look I thought that the Syncro from speaking to the owner was fairly sound and just required a reconned prop. However I wasn't prepared for the list of faults pointed out via email by a few people who have seen this bus and tested it prior to the current owner and with him owning it.

After being contacted by a few folks listing the following possible issues.

1. Rear diff going
2. VC gone virtually really tight
3. Rear dive shaft in desperate need of replacement*
4. New rear CV's required
5. Diff lock switches broken
6. No aux heater included
7. Prop in need of reconditioning
8. No prop bars
9. Serious rust hidden away.

I lost 100 squid, my wife and I are really dissappointed but, it would have been worse if we had travelled 200 miles to drive home in a possible 2-3k to spend project.

We have decided to wait, and go and buy a car from germany, ex-police or something. I have seen some sound buses go for 2k so I'll contact my mate in Hamburg and get a sorted wagen.

Sad but there it is. It wasn't the bus I though it was and I didn't want to take a risk on it. 2k is still a fair wedge. I'll add another grand and get a better base vehicle.

I wasn't the only one interested so I am sure it will sell to someone will buy it. Just not me.

You live and learn.

No, TMT has had that link under his sig for quite a while now, and it is true that there's about as many Syncros out there that might need to have a transaxle rebuild as those that don't... even though they change OK at the mo', this doesn't mean that other issues might exist. They are all a bit long in the tooth now, so think this was only a genuine warning...

But as matt says, £1800 is a good starting point if you want one to sort out nicely, sure looks OK in the addy.
