How to setup the timing on a diesel? No cam belt fitted!

Hi,
Im picking up an engine tomorrow from the scrappies - unfortunately the engine has been left in a shed for a while (i had the alternator of it a few weeks back so i know) and the owner has let people help themselves (like me).
It has no cam belt or cam belt tensioner.
Anyway, im going to put it in me van next week.
Does anyone know how to setup the timing on a diesel (1Y) from scratch like im going to have to?
What tools do i need?
Cheers

Ringo, turn the crank shaft till the notch lines up with the marker through the inspection hole on the bell housing. The notch is a very distinct V. Once down turn the cam shaft till number one cylinder, the one closest to the cam belt hp rocking, ie: the lobes are pointing to 10 and 2 o'clock. Check the back of the cam shaft to make sure the locking slot hp running along the line of the cylinder head. This hp where you lock it with a flat bar or proper tool if you have one. Now the injector pump needs to be lined up using a notch behind the pump pully, i think. Didn't have to do it on mines as the belt was already no it. I just locked it with a drill bit! Andy simpson is the man to ask about timing the injection pump. Hope this helps you, took me a while to find all the marks and work out what was going on, but not a big job dude

I will be changing the cam belt on my new engine in the next few days also - mine currently has a belt fitted mind you. I dont intend to retime my fuel pump, simply remove the old belt and slap the new one straight back on.
I would assume unless the Crank pulley or the Pump pulley have been tampered with the timing will be "cock" on when you put the new belt on.
