1.9 auto - stutters and stalls when trying to pull away cold

Hello all,
We've got a 1988, 1.9 auto, petrol, right hand drive caravelle/transporter.
From cold our van will stutter or stall every now and then when we try to pull away at a junction or traffic lights, etc. (Quite a few times I've ended up conked out in the middle of a round-a-bout!) It will always start again first time - but as soon as I put my foot on the gas it'll stutter and might stall again. Usually this only happens with in the the first 15 mins or so of the journey and then it will be fine.
Has anyone had this with their van? Any help appreciated?
Cheers
Mark

This could be a multitude of things but best to start with the basics such as spark plugs/ ignition leads/ dizzy cap.
Check condition first, then if you wish replace 1 item at a time to check if you have cured the fault.

Only does it cold?? never when warm?
I would suspect the manifold heater isnt working, or cutting out too soon..
But as said.. could be several things..
Might be worth checking the vac advance on the dizzy, but this would normally show up when warm too..
Maybe give it an extra minute to allow it to warm up before setting off..
Sure it isnt a "choking" problem.. ie its running a bit too rich and choing it when you press the accel?? does it do it more/worse if you "hit" the accelerator or if you "press" it?

I had this problem with mine. I took it in for a service an Monday and it turned out the link for the Automatic choke had seized. It works a treat now. Spent today out on Exmoor super weather, brill!

Yes! If I hit the accelerator hard it would definately stall. Sometimes if I'm very light on the accelerator it will stutter and pull away without stalling.

Well.. I reckon the carb should come off and have a jolly good clean and a new gasket kit.. the accel pump housing/diaphragm would be worth inspecting and replaciing (it doesnt come in the kit)
Is the vac advance unit working correctly also?
How much crud and water is in the fuel filter?
