1989 1.9 Watercooled - Fuel pipe connection on engine block

The connection to the from the fuel pipe to the engine block has come loose on my van. It seems like some sort of grommet has corroded.
Is this normal ? It seems weird that there is nothing to secure the metal tube to the block, any idea how to fix it?
Thanks
Dave

DaveB, your description of the fuel hose/pipe within the engine bay on your van is confusing. In the engine bay of T25 fitted with a 1.9DG petrol engine, a flexible rubber braided fuel hose comes from the bulkhead passes near to the alternator & air filter box & then connects to the fuel pump. A short length of similar fuel hose connects the fuel pump to the carb. Some T25 owners do replace the braided fuel hose (standard VW) with the plastic type.
Could you possibly be talking about the return fuel line which is on the nearside of the engine & runs all the way back to the tank?

The only metal tube fastened to the engine block is the waterpipe from the thermostat housing across to the oil cooler (That's IF there's one fitted)

Hopefully you can see what I am waffling about!

Right, IIRC that elbow is where the vacuum hose that powers your servo on the brakes picks up vacuum from the inlet manifold.

Would it affect engine performance when out ?
The van was stalling non stop until I stuck it back in

yes, it deffo would make it stall, and you may have experienced a hard brake pedle and less braking power...... its been giving you a massive vac leak, which will have messed your timing about and altered your fuel mixture.......

Thank you all, totally sorted with loctite and cable tie
