More Engine Woes - I Think!

My 2ltr CU Aircooled has for about the last month been putting out clouds of blue smoke on start up and it takes a good 5 minutes before it stops. I put this down to the oil change I did, putting 20/50 in rather than the 10/40 semi synthetic I had been using. Also, there was more, er, rattling from the engine, so I've just gone back to the 10/40, but the smoke is still there and it feels down on power. I went to Scotland at the weekend and whilst it made it there and back it felt slow, even though I had it up to 60 - 70, although as soon as it hit the hills it died down to about 50. I took the leads off one by one and both of the left bank ones made no audible difference to the engine revs. Does it sound like my oil needs an engine change? It's running an auto box by the way.
