Thanks all. now then the buzzer of joy and happiness!
I have fitted an alty from another 1.6d all connections are the same yet as you say buzzer probs, I disconnected the wire to the pres switch on the oil filter mounting body and earhted this and the noisy little s***e has shut up, so will fit a new switch, why does the fitting of say a petrol one cause the buzzer to sound?

The oil light and buzzer are controlled off 2 pressure sensors, 1 high and 1 low. Below 2000rpm the high pressure sensor is ignored and as long as the low pressure switch has required pressure the light stays off. If the high pressure switch has not enoguh pressure by 2000rpm the buzzer and light come on. This system is built into the dash pod but takes its speed on diesels form the alternator, petrol alternators do not have required connection out of alternator.
The problem you describe sounds more like a dash pod of sensor or pressure fault. Get engine upto temp, fit a test light connection onto battery + put the other end on the high pressure sender its un likely to be lit at idle, it must light up before 2000rpm, if it does not replace sensor, if still not right start looking for an engine.

OPK Andy, Have oil press gauge so no pressure is ok, is it the W/L connection on the drv alty that sends the signal? if so then that is connected, .
As a footnote, the buzzer of joy(from an optimists point of view) is silent at idle and came on at revs, can I assume the hp oil switch is on the filter housing? if so the where is the lp one

W termainal, should have a red/black wire.
High switch is on filter housing. Low switch is back of cyl head about heater outlet hose.
The low pressure sender can not put buzzer on, it will only come on above 2000rpm.
If you have a guage min pressure should be 2 bar at 80 degrees at 2000rpm

Yep that makes sense. got hold of an alty from a fronteira, same body but without the w * d terms but the bearings were usable, the audi unit I canabalised had the required terms.
I will get a new swith this week and confirm all is working and if so then it might be worth putting an article together for T'wiki?
