No fuel?

My 82 2.0 Aircooled has been sitting up since October and now wont start. Seems to be no fuel in carbs....now, here is the interesting bit! Where the van sits it is on a slight forward facing downhill slope (back is about 3-4 inches above front), and the drivers side (petrol cap) is against the neighbours house wall.
The rest of the drive is a very steep uphill slope so need to get something biggish to pull it out. Is there any easy way to quickly check that i still have fuel? it certainly had some when i parked it up.
(Batt is charged and turns over strongly)
any ideas (or inspiring words!) greatly appreciated

Try pouring some petrol directly into the carbs then try and start it.
If the pump is a manual one the fuel may have drained from the carbs.

The outlet on the fuel tank is at the rear.
If there wasn't much fuel in it and its sat nose dowm, then the pick up pipe in the may be just sucking on air instead of being imersed in fuel?
You might have to get pushing! Get some chocks and do it a few inches at a time. Good luck.

hi m8
the fuel will have evaporated from the carbs. could take ages to get any from the tank to fill them and they'll have to be full to start it when its this cold. i'd take the fuel pipe off the "t" piece where it splits to go to each carb and stick it in a bottle, then turn the engine over until you have fuel there. once you have fuel to there, re-connect the pipe and pour whats in the bottle equally down the throat of each carb just to give it a start while it fills them.
i'm lucky as mine has an electric pump so it fills the carbs each time i turn the ignition on.
just as a safety precaution when you do anything like this, have a dry powder fire extinguisher to hand just in case

Time to suck like a pro hoe.
You can easily suck petrol from the front to the back. When you get some coming out the other end quickly get it back on your fuel pump and stick some fuel down the barrel of the carbs as well. Hopefully after a quick blast with the ignition you should be away.
Make sure you have a good battery for this though as it will need to crank for a while.
If it doesn't fire after that you fuel pump may have dried up and could be buggered, that's last desparate measures though.

Hiya, don't crank for more than 10 seconds without letting the starter cool down (5 mins), or you may have to buy a new starter as well....

stick some petrol down the carbs, just a teaspoon full for a start, get it to fire........
and dont leave it standing for so long next time- the fuel may have "gone off" this new fangled semiskimmed does that.
