Hi,

I've just bought a spare gearbox - hopefully i wont be needing it for a long time....

So, whats the best way to store one of these? I was wondering whether to turn it on its side and completely fill it with oil?

Would it matter what oil i used?

Is that a bad idea?

stand it on the bellhousing, raised a bit if petrol to clear input shaft, seal the breather and reverse switch holes if not already sealed and don't worry about it there will be enough oil on all the surfaces to keep the rust at bay as long as no water gets in. To fill will take a lot of oil, make it heavy and prone to leaking, chances are the input shaft seal will weep if full especially if subject to temp fluctuation and build up of pressure. If not sealed then over time it may get condensation build up. Keep it dry and even temp (ie not in the sun) if possible. Oh and cover the input shaft with moly grease as this will rust given the chance.

You also need to either push the gear change shaft right in and/or cover with something to stop it rusting and tearing up the seal in the body of the gearbox.
