Hi Again,
I bought my 1985 t25 a few months ago from a guy who said it had a reconditioned Audi 1.6t engine installed in 1995 which had 87,000 miles up on it. I know nothing of engines etc so took him for his word. I'm beginning to think that in fact the engine that is in there is still the original. 2 reasons:

1. it will only reach 65mph
2. the oil and expansion tanks are accessible from behind the num plate which from what i've read would suggest that this is the original engine.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Is there an ID number I can check to see whether it is the original engine?

To be honest, the engine runs fine and sounds good but i'm beginning to think it should have more poke for only 87,000 mls on the clock.

Have you looked at the engine number on the V5?

what does it say there? If the previous seller did not notify DVLA it will tell you what the old engine was....DG DF DJ MV common petrol ones - don't know the diesel, sorry.

Post this number up, and people will have a better idea.

On my petrol engines, the engine number is stamped on the block near the oil breather tower I think.

What's a V5? DVLA is in UK I assume, i'm in Ireland.

please tell us what fuel it runs on and pref a pic of the engine bay..
if it is a 1.6D non turbo diesel engine, then 65 is prob about as good as it gets until it blows up...

ah crap, really sorry. It's a diesel, or dayzel as we say in Ireland. Will try to get a pic of the engine bay up but it may be a few days.

VW developed the 1.6 diesel which ended up in different formats.

1.6 n/a in the T3 and 1.6 TD in Golf, Passat, Audi 80 and the T3 also.

The ones that went into cars were mounted upright and had hydraulic valve lifters, the ones in the vans were slanted and had manual tappets.

It is possible to transfer one of the car engines into the van either with or without changing the head, only the oil sump has to be taken over from the original engine.

(it is said though that the hydraulic valve lifters don't like working a t a slant and give trouble)

There also are multiple possible combinations of just changing the engine or all the engine externals as well.

It may well be that the block of your engine came out of an Audi. You'd need to read the code on the block to be sure

At the end of the day that doesn't really matter ...it's still only a 1.6 with roughly 70 bhp (with turbo, 50 hp without) asked to push 2 tons.

So top speed will never be great.

A well adjusted TD should be able to give a short squirt of 130 kmh / 75 mph though ...but it's safer to cruise at max 100 kmh

Finally got around to this. My service book says that following engine was installed:

Audi 80 Turbo Diesel with the letters CY037250 after it, is that the engine code then?

I took a few pics of the bay and some close ups of the numbers I could find, but couldn't see CY037250 on it anywhere. Here are the pics:

It'd be good if I could establish engine I have so that I can try to get all the techy info. Any help appreciated.

Why VW did not fit hydraulic lifters i do not know for sure but its DEFO not down to the angle thing. My theory is its to protect against over revving cold from "white van man" causing pistons and valves to collide.
