Ive just bought a jx diesel engine and matching gearbox wiring loom etc to replace the tired 1.9 df currently fitted in my van. Anyone know where I might find some information on carrying out this conversion and which parts I require. (someone must have done it before). A how to would be great.

Depends what you've got, but diesel has different engine bars/mounts, gearbox mount is different, air filter is different. Battery position ideally in the rear but not essential as long as starter and battery are good. And diesel rear gear selector socket is different too.
It's pretty straightforward, the front to back looms are the same pretty much so old engine bay loom out swap over, add relay for glow plugs.
Remove engine and gearbox together, assemble new pair and fit.
easy when youy say it quick.

Ive bought all the stuff you mentioned above beaker even the battery tray, gear selector rods and wiring. Is a diesel fuel tank the same as a petrol one?

I was under the impression that diesel and petrol tanks are different in design.
Doesn't matter to me.. if they're the same, and the diesel one has larger outlets, guess what I'll be doing with mine

I have a DF which is seriously underpowerd, thanks to Mr onion for telling me what it was!
I went out to bakewell today with the dog and Lorna and by god it was slow up the hills, loads of traffic behind me! on the flat i did get to 85kph but was windy as hell so didnt push it...tickover is fine, setting off is fine...im just wondering if its way down on power. think its about 70hp. I shouldnt be as worried as i am, with going round Europe next month, the person i got it from in Jan, drove it from Berlin for me.
Let me know how you get on with the conversion...would love to pop a more powerful unit in, no point going lpg, as i lose more hp and torque then

ah 60...how much torque i wonder?
Apart from it being a DF, i wouldnt know the differance between that and a Dj etc. ( i guess not just bore and stroke, as in M50 bmw engines) or R /RG or T /TB/TG engines (same blocks, diff heads in Toyotas). i guess i have lots to learn yet about Vw's
People like my van...i actually like it now, i can see the world go by as i drive compared to the bimmers
